Cowboys need to find a way to get the running game going
The Dallas Cowboys had the league’s number two offense in 2025. A huge reason is because they were able to be highly productive passing and running the ball. They finished second in passing yards per game and ninth in rushing, with the latter being spearheaded by Javonte Williams and his 1,201 yards, which ranked ninth overall.
As is always the case when Dak Prescott is healthy at the quarterback position, the Cowboys are expected to be one of the NFL’s better offenses again this season. However, in the first two games, the Cowboys are averaging just 67.5 yards a game on the ground. Specifically, Williams has just 71 yards on 24 carries, which is just 2.96 yards per attempt. That simply won’t cut it.
Prescott is one of the top quarterbacks in the league. With that said, neither he, or any quarterback, can be asked to solely carry the load for an offense. Defenses are too good in the NFL for opposing offenses to be one-dimensional. It may work here and there depending on the opponent, but for the duration of a 17-game season, it’s a recipe for disaster.
It’s not like the Cowboys don’t have enough talent in their running back room to be productive. Williams proved a season ago that he can carry significant load, and Emari Demercado showed during his three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals that he can add another layer to a rushing attack. Plus, Hunter Luepke is capable of doing some things, and the Cowboys also recently added Tyler Goodson from the Atlanta Falcons practice squad.
It’s time for offensive coordinator Klayton Adams to get back to the drawing board and figure out what’s not working and get it corrected. That will be a tough task against the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday in Brazil as their defense is only allowing up 83.5 yards per game so far. The last thing the Cowboys want to do is to have quick drives on offense and give the ball back to Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry with short fields to score, especially since their defense is still figuring things out under first-year coordinator Christian Parker.
