Cowboys rookie could make a case for playing time this offseason
The Dallas Cowboys focus this entire offseason was on improving their defense. Heading into free agency, the Cowboys focused on adding talent on that side of the ball. They paid Jalen Thompson to be a high-end starter, they traded for Rashan Gary to improve their pass rush and defensive line, and they spent their first three draft picks on adding rookies to help rebuild the defense.
But to kickoff day three, the Cowboys added Penn State offensive tackle Drew Shelton. So far, the noise surrounding Shelton has been quiet, but you rarely hear much about offensive linemen until the pads come on. After the Cowboys drafted Shelton, they sung his praises loudly in post-draft press conferences and other media availability.
According the multiple reports, the Cowboys had a day two grade on Shelton and considered drafting him with their third-round pick, before taking Michigan LB/EDGE Jaishawn Barham.
One of the biggest story lines coming out of OTA’s is the Cowboys making their left tackle job an open competition. According to head coach Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys allow the starting left tackle job play out over the offseason. Schottenheimer told the media that third-year offensive tackle Tyler Guyton and Nathan Thomas will compete for the starting left tackle job this offseason. But what if Drew Shelton impresses throughout the offseason?
Shelton is not the strongest offensive lineman from a physicality and power standpoint, but his athleticism and pass protection were his best traits coming out of Penn State. Neither Guyton or Thomas has impressed in regular-season action for the Cowboys so far throughout their careers, so it seems a bit unfair to not give the rookie a fair shot at proving himself this offseason.
This offseason will be a big one for both Tyler Guyton and Nathan Thomas, but for the long-term answer at left tackle for the Dallas Cowboys, Drew Shelton should be given the same opportunities as the others to win the starting left tackle job this offseason.
Do you think Shelton could make a case for playing time this offseason or is it too early?
