Adam Schefter: ‘It certainly sounds like Jerry Jones is in favor of having back Mike McCarthy’

According to Adam Schefter, Jerry Jones may be leading the charge to keep Mike McCarthy.

The tenor surrounding the Dallas Cowboys will change before dusk reaches The Star in Frisco. When Sunday’s Dallas Cowboys game comes to an end the team will be tasked with getting off of the proverbial (maybe literal) couch and doing some serious work. They have been eliminated from playoff contention for a couple of weeks now and known that this is their fate, nevertheless Jerry Jones seems prepared to let the situation with Mike McCarthy drag on throughout the next week.

The situation here is that McCarthy’s contract is expiring and the Cowboys need to either come to terms with him on a new one (a matter he technically has a say in) or inform him that they are moving on.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there is a divide on that front between Jerry Jones and others within the organization.

Schefter made sure to note that the situation here was fluid, but that Jerry Jones was “in favor” of bringing McCarthy back. He added that he did not know if others in the organization felt the same way. What’s more is that Schefter added a team like the New Orleans Saints could be interested in McCarthy if he becomes available. Ultimately Schefter deemed McCarty to be safe in the segment that he was a part of.

It is incredibly likely that the Cowboys will draw this out as long as they can, but another team having interest in McCarthy is an important factor and what could differentiate this from when Jason Garrett was in the same predicament five years ago.

According to reports, another team would have to request to interview Mike McCarthy if they wanted to interview him in the coming days. The Cowboys hold an “exclusive” window to negotiate with him until January 14th.

Hypothetically speaking, if the Saints requested McCarthy sometime before then and the team allowed the interview to happen that would seemingly speak volumes about their overall intentions. If they were to deny the interview obviously the same holds true in the other sense.

Buckle up.
