3 Cowboys players we'd like to see more of in the final 3 regular-season games
The final games of this season need to involve serious evaluation for the future.
There may still be three games remaining on the 2024 NFL regular-season schedule, but the Dallas Cowboys really have nothing left to play for. Any hope of reaching the postseason is dead. What they need to do now is start focusing more on the future.
There are still a lot of questions that need to be answered before they can jump entirely into offseason mode, the first and foremost is whether or not Mike McCarthy is worthy of sticking around. Beyond that it comes down to evaluating this roster with an eye on the future.
With that in mind, we would like to see the Dallas Cowboys take full advantage of the final three games remaining this year. By that we mean getting a few players more involved to get a jumpstart on the evaluation process for next year and beyond.
WR Jonathan Mingo
The Cowboys acquired WR Jonathan Mingo via trade from the Carolina Panthers for a 2025 fourth-round pick with more of the future in mind. He still has two years remaining on his rookie contract after the completion of the 2024 season, but still one would think they'd get a jumpstart on the evaluation process this year. As of right now, he's only managed two catches for a total of 10 yards in five games. Dallas has three more games left this year to try to get him more involved and should take advantage of this rare opportunity.
RB Deuce Vaughn
Is Deuce Vaughn nothing more than a fun draft story? To date, he only has 11 rushing attempts for 33 yards in six games this season, which is less than his 40 rushing yards on 23 attempts last year. Considering he's really the only running back under contract beyond the 2024 season, you would think the Cowboys would be more interested in further evaluating his future with the organization. He may not be RB1 material, but that doesn't mean he couldn't be a good change of pace back. It's time to figure out what he's capable of.
QB Trey Lance
Despite costing them a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Cowboys as of yet haven't shown any signs they intend to play QB Trey Lance anytime soon. Sure they may have made up their minds about him based on his play in practice and preseason, but not giving him the opportunity to showcase his talent in a legit NFL game seems like a mistake. Dallas has a rare opportunity with three games remaining in the regular season to evaluate his progress without jeopardizing anything. Will they do it? Probably not. Should they? Yes.
