A recap of Tuesday’s press conference.

With the 2024 NFL Draft beginning on Thursday, the Dallas Cowboys hosted their annual pre-draft news conference on Tuesday at The Star. Mike McCarthy, Stephen Jones, and Jerry Jones all answered questions from the media regarding their offseason, the upcoming draft, and their expectations for the season.

Jerry Jones uses the phrase “all in” again

Team owner Jerry Jones had the media buzzing heading into free agency in March, when he told them the team would be “all in” when it comes to making moves to put themselves in a situation to succeed.

Unsurprisingly, when the Cowboys only signed one player in the first wave of free agency and watched several players join other teams, Jones faced media backlash for his previous comments.

On Tuesday, Jones remained adamant that the team is all in, expressing his confidence in the current roster.

He mentioned that the team is currently short on cap room, but believes that there is plenty of talent in this draft class to help the team this upcoming season.

Sam Williams looking for more opportunities in 2024

Third-year defensive end Sam Williams has shown flashes of being an impressive player for the Cowboys in his short career. He has 8.5 sacks in his career, with two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. With that said, Stephen Jones mentioned that Williams has told the team he would like to play more. Given that defensive ends Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler both signed with the Washington Commanders this offseason, Williams is in a position to have his best season yet with the team.

Jerry Jones talks about contracts not being done with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb

The team has put themselves in a tricky situation by waiting so long to extend their franchise quarterback and wide receiver. Both Prescott and Lamb find themselves needing a new contract with the team, and the front office was asked why they have not been able to come to an agreement on those deals yet. Jerry Jones gave an interesting response:

“We’d like to see more leaves fall. We’d like to see more action. It’s called option quarterback. I’ve spent my life (playing) option quarterback. I want to see some more cards played.”

Cowboys remain open to trading down from pick 24

The Cowboys have been viewed by many as a likely candidate to trade down from their 24th overall selection on Thursday, as they do not have a fourth-round pick. When asked about that possibility, Jerry Jones acknowledged it as a possibility, but noted it would depend on who is available on the board at their pick.
