Cowboys officially awarded two compensatory draft picks

The NFL is handling all of their year-end business in the usual flurry of activity. On Friday, the 32 compensatory picks were announced, awarded based on a formula of qualifying free agents lost and signed during last year’s free agency frenzy.

The Dallas Cowboys, as has been expected, received two picks in April’s draft. Last offseason, Dallas didn’t sign a signal free agent who was considered for the formula. They did have three qualifying free agents sign with other teams, but only two of them – Conner McGovern and Dalton Schultz – resulted in compensatory picks. Dallas receives an extra fifth-round pick for losing McGovern (No. 173) and an extra sixth-round pick for losing Schultz (No. 216).

The Cowboys traded away their own fourth, fifth and sixth rounders in trades from last season, so along with an extra seventh-round pick from a 2022 trade, they are now back up to seven total selections. Dallas has the 24th pick in the first, second and seventh rounds, the 23rd pick of the third round (Miami forfeited a pick) and the 13th pick of the seventh round (Raiders from the Johnathan Hankins deal).
