Cowboys news: Dallas restructures deals for more salary cap room
After a bit of drama surrounding if Joe Milton would return to the practice squad, the QB has returned. Brian Schottenheimer gave us details on who would be wearing the “C” on their chest in 2026 for the Cowboys, which is a much different approach than we have seen over the last few years.
Quinnen Williams is excited about the turnaround he is seeing on the defensive side of the the ball for the Cowboys. Dallas also made some financial moves that could mean they are still looking to add players.

Could more personnel moves be on the horizon for Dallas?
The Dallas Cowboys created a little more than $19 million in salary cap space by restructuring the contracts of three players, sources told ESPN.
Veteran defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland and tight end Jake Ferguson had their deals reworked to give the Cowboys flexibility as the 2026 season begins or allow the club to carry over any unused space to 2027.
According to the NFL Players Association website, the Cowboys had roughly $14.2 million of cap space before the restructured contracts.

The Cowboys have named their 2026 captains. A bit different approach and some new faces will lead the Cowboys in 2026.
The Cowboys have an 11-person leadership council for this year’s team. Now they have a smaller group of captains to go with it.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced the team’s four captains Thursday. Quarterback Dak Prescott was the lone offensive captain. He’s joined by defensive tackles Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark, as well as kicker Brandon Aubrey.

FRISCO, Texas – It’s been a busy week for the Dallas Cowboys as they wrap up training camp and prepare for the regular season. First comes a league mandated break, where Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said he’d enjoy some time with his daughters but find a way to get his heart rate going.
Dallas’ quarterback room is now back at three, after the team brought Joe Milton back on the practice squad Wednesday afternoon. Prescott is glad that he’s back.
“It means a lot,” Prescott said of Milton’s return. “Obviously, me just personally, I thought he would’ve gotten picked up in the waivers. Fortunate for us, we got a hell of a player back and a guy that makes our room better, a guy that makes our team better. His spirit, just the way that he approaches the day… he’s a hell of a dude, a hell of a competitor.”

No one had more questions coming into training camp than left tackle Tyler Guyton. With just a few days left before the regular season, the Cowboys seem to have a ton of confidence in their starting left tackle.
One of the offseason’s biggest question marks has turned into one of the team’s most confident players. Despite having doubts around Terence Steele at right tackle, Tyler Guyton has done everything the right way this offseason to be the left tackle of the Dallas Cowboys. “Probably that second week of training camp is where we were like ‘whoa.’ It was just the way the confidence that he was taking in his sets and the counters that he was countering so when a defensive end rushes up field and tries to counter and go inside, he has the ability to move his feet inside and slam the door shut on that. Going up against different guys and watching him go up against different guys like Eze, watching him go up against RG and Malachi, and guys like that. You saw a guy that was beginning to understand the matchup element…”

We all assume the Cowboys defense will improve in 2026. But it’s always nice to hear the best defender on the roster see’s a night and day difference between the 2025 Cowboys defense and the 2026 Cowboys defense.
Quinnen Williams joined the Dallas Cowboys for seven forgettable games in 2025 following his trade deadline deal. Even with the four-time Pro Bowler, the Cowboys defense stunk up the joint last season.
In the months since, the 28-year-old has seen a distinct turnaround under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
“The growth, it’s like night and day,” Williams said of the strides made by the Cowboys on defense, via the team’s official website. “Starting in OTAs, and starting the first week of training camp, getting a chance to go against one of the best offenses in battle every single day has helped us tremendously. The mindset coming from the coaches, top down to the players and to the leadership, has been drastically changed. It’s just fun, man.
“I just can’t wait to see the process and the results from all the hard work, but we’re not done yet.”

DT Jonathan Bullard: The Cowboys are betting on Bullard’s experience and versatility. But he hasn’t practiced since Aug. 4 due to injury (groin/core) and I believe there will be a ramp up period before he plays. With Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark spearheading the group, I think the Cowboys can be patient with him.
OL Drew Shelton: The fourth-round rookie is not NFL ready. His struggles in the preseason cannot be ignored by the Cowboys and I wouldn’t expect him to play early on. Can he develop into a starting tackle? Maybe. But it will take time. For now, Shelton might be looking at many “healthy scratch” games barring any injuries.
