Cowboys claim RB Emari Demercado off waivers
The Dallas Cowboys parted ways with running backs Phil Mafah and Jaydon Blue on Sunday as they were included in their roster cuts. They have now added a new running back as they have claimed Emari Dermercado off of waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs. He signed a one-year deal for $1.25 million with them in March.
A former undrafted free agent out of TCU in 2023, Demercado spent his first three NFL seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He’s played in 40 games throughout his career with two starts (both came as a rookie). He ran for 284 yards and two touchdowns in his first year and 223 yards and one touchdown in 2024.
Last season, Demercado had his best campaign rushing wise with 312 yards, but he didn’t log a rushing touchdown. He’s averaged 6.5 yards per carry on the pro level, and he’s also gained 324 yards receiving on 50 receptions in his career.
This move gives the Cowboys some more depth on the roster behind starter Javonte Williams and backups Malik Davis, whose earned the RB2 spot, and Hunter Luepke, who went undrafted in 2023 like Demercado. With his familiarity with Klayton Adams, it’ll be interesting to see if Demercado can carve out a role in Dallas.
