3 roster issues to settle in the Cowboys preseason finale
The famous saying “blink and you’ll miss it” could not be more true. After an offseason that felt like an eternity, the Cowboys are just two weeks away from the start of their regular season.
With their third and final preseason game on Friday night, the Cowboys have multiple roster spots up for grabs that can be decided against the New Orleans Saints. Today we will look at three burning questions the Cowboys will need to answer before the start of their 2026 season.
3. Who will win the starting linebacker job?
One of the major questions coming into training camp was the Cowboys situation at the linebacker spot. With DeMarvion Overshown’s injury history and Dee Winters having limited starting experience, most Cowboy fans had 2025 PTSD about what the linebacker position could look like.
With two weeks before the start of the season, the linebacker position was one of the many positive developments in training camp and throughout two preseason games. Rookie LB Jaishawn Barham has stormed onto the scene. Despite missing some time with a groin injury, you can make the argument Barham has been one the Cowboys five best players so far this offseason.
Along with Barham’s charge, Winters has also had a nice camp and has brought a calming sense to the Cowboys linebacker room alongside Overshown. Just a year ago, the Cowboys struggled to put a single capable linebacker on the field, but now it sure seems like they have three, maybe even four with Shemar James making positive strides in year two.
Whether it’s Barham or Winters on the field alongside Overshown when the season kicks off against the New York Giants, the Cowboys have two solid options to pick from, which is a huge upgrade from where they were in 2025.
2. Will Camden Brown earn his star?
Speaking of top five performers in training camp, Camden Brown was one of the biggest stars of training camp and preseason action for the Cowboys.
After signing with the team as a UDFA, not many people expected Brown to push for a roster spot this offseason, but boy did he do that. Brown has shown more than enough to make the Cowboys final 53-man roster, but given the Cowboys numbers at the wide receiver position, Jonathan Mingo’s offseason development, and the need for roster spots on the defensive side of the ball, it seems to be a 50/50 chance if Brown will make the final roster, or look to clear waivers and head to the practice squad.
1. Will the Cowboys add a veteran CB?
It has been rumored for a few weeks now that the Cowboys have been hunting veteran cornerbacks before the start of the regular season. With DaRon Bland, Cobie Durant, Shavon Revel Jr., and Caleb Downs expected to play most of the snaps at cornerback, Bland’s injury history and Revel’s lack of experience has many concerned that the depth behind those four could be improved.
Adoree Jackson’s name was tied to the Cowboys recently given his relationship with Christian Parker. Whether it be Jackson or another veteran option on the market, it sure doesn’t sound like the Cowboys are set at the cornerback position as of today.
