When you have been in the desert as long as we have, a lot of things look like water. It has now been over 30 years since we as Dallas Cowboys fans last quenched our thirst with the team winning the Super Bowl. Who would have thought being parched for this long was even possible?

I am not speaking for anyone other than myself, but I imagine that at some point in time you have felt like cosmic stars were aligning and that surely it all meant the Cowboys were finally going to do it, only for them to not and to be even more disappointed because you got your hopes up.

You might want to stop reading here.

The United States World Cup team is the latest point of hope

Let’s be very clear that we are simply having fun here. None of these things actually mean anything. We all know this.

Now that we have gotten this out of the way, 2026 is sort of shaping up into the year of sports miracles. Consider the champions that have been crowned in various sports to date:

  • NCAA Basketball: Michigan Wolverines
  • NBA: New York Knicks
  • NHL: Carolina Hurricanes
  • NCAA Baseball: Oklahoma Sooners

There is a little bit of cherry-picking here, but obviously these are all major sports in the United States. Maybe one of the teams listed is even one that you claim which means that you have had a nice few months.

Let’s take a look at that list again though and note the last time that each of these teams won a title before 2026.

  • Michigan Wolverines: 1989
  • New York Knicks: 1973
  • Carolina Hurricanes: 2006
  • Oklahoma Sooners: 1994

All of these teams broke serious droughts this calendar year. Three of them, the majority, were droughts that were even longer than The Drought™ which surrounds the Dallas Cowboys at the moment.

At the very least we can cling to this as some sort of potential sign from the sports gods, right? Maybe they really are in the mood to reward those who have been without for a generation or two.

The latest sign of sports hope comes from a team that hasn’t exactly been fighting a drought as much as literally all of their history. On Thursday night the United States Men’s National Team lost their final group stage game in the World Cup to go 2-1 in that part of the tournament. While the team lost on Thursday night, their future was secure before the game ever kicked off. They have had arguably the greatest start to a World Cup in U.S. Soccer history.

If America’s Team, that one, can break through and touch ground that they never had before then why can’t America’s Team, this one, do so as well?

When it has been 30 years these questions start to make more sense. That’s where we are.

Hopefully that isn’t the case for much longer.
