Cowboys could go in unexpected direction in first round
Have you ever walked into one of those funhouses at a carnival? The kind where the mirrors are all warped and you can get kind of lost? Sometimes you wind up bumping into one because you are so confused by the optical illusion.
You know this when you walk into the experience. It is understood that you are going to be tricked, hoodwinked, and bamboozled. The final few days before the NFL draft can sometimes be the same way.
Dallas Cowboys may go offense with their first pick
Let’s be clear that anything is possible, especially in the NFL draft. What we are about to discuss sounds farfetched, but the point of the funhouse analogy wasn’t to say it is totally impossible.
As the eleventh hour passes, reports are starting to emerge that the Dallas Cowboys could maybe go offense in the first round and specifically with their first overall selection. This logic is born out of the hypothetical that defense gets wiped out before they pick at 12 overall and do not trade up, and that they simply take their highest-rated prospect who is on the board at that time.

Almost all of the mock draft focus on the Cowboys has been about the defense and deservedly so. Throughout the offseason, however, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said helping the offense is not out of the question. If the top defensive players are gone by the time the Cowboys pick at No. 12, then they could be staring at the highest-graded prospect on their board being an offensive player, such as receivers Carnell Tate (Ohio State) and Jordyn Tyson (Arizona State).
In 2020, receiver CeeDee Lamb was sixth on the Cowboys’ board and was available at No. 17. It was a blinking light situation. While this scenario wouldn’t be quite as big a difference, for those who believe you always take the best player regardless of need, don’t rule out an offensive selection if Dallas doesn’t trade that pick.
It is possible that this is all fluff or gamesmanship or trying to boost the stock of a certain player. That is how the NFL draft works on some level. But isn’t it also possible that this could really happen? Or rather shouldn’t we consider that possibility among all others?
Adam Schefter discussed the idea of Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson specifically falling to 12 and the Cowboys having to make a decision.
From a local standpoint, Nick Harris included Tyson on a list that he believes the Cowboys’ first two picks will come from. Not to speak for him, but it seems that he is allotting for the hypothetical we are outlining where Dallas gets wiped out and has to make a decision. Maybe an offensive one.
Bobby Belt corroborated the idea in noting that it shouldn’t be dismissed. He also brought up how the Cowboys hosted Indiana’s Omar Cooper Jr. on a 30 visit and noted that it was likely a covering of bases because the team values him in that scenario.
It isn’t shocking to say that the Cowboys will have to pivot off of their plan if their plan falls apart. Nobody is presenting this as breaking news in that sense. Just keep all of this in mind should a certain line of dominoes fall on Thursday night.
