Dallas Cowboys officially place second-round tender on Brandon Aubrey
Brandon Aubrey is (likely) not going anywhere.
It was reported on Saturday that the Dallas Cowboys are officially placing a second-round tender on kicker Brandon Aubrey. The value for the tender is $5.76M.
The Cowboys initially discovered Brandon Aubrey ahead of the 2023 NFL season. His story about playing soccer in college at Notre Dame, pursuing Major League Soccer, and ultimately being convinced by his wife that he should give NFL kicking a try is well-documented.
Brandon has been one of the best kickers in the entire NFL his 3 years with the Cowboys. He has become particularly known for his deep kicks as he is a bit of a specialist (putting things lightly) from downtown. Last season saw a few hiccups, but he is certainly still worth having around.
What happens next with the Cowboys and Aubrey
Given that the Cowboys have placed a second-round tender on Aubrey, other teams are free to negotiate a deal with him. Should a hypothetical team want Aubrey badly enough they can agree to a deal, and Dallas will have the right to match it.
If the Cowboys do not want to do so then Aubrey would sign with the hypothetical team in question and that team would owe Dallas a second-round pick.
The tender guarantees a minimum salary for Aubrey which is $5.76M as noted. Obviously the Cowboys could still negotiate with Aubrey as well moving forward.
Things have been a little dramatic with this story
During the week of the NFL Combine there were a ton of reports about the contentious nature, seemingly, of negotiations between Aubrey and the Cowboys.
Initially it was reported that Dallas made an offer of $7.5M from an average per year perspective. It is worth noting that Kansas City’s Harrison Butker currently leads all kickers with an APY of $6.4M.
That report was corrected by its author in Calvin Watkins and all reports still corroborated that Dallas has made an offer to make Aubrey the highest-paid kicker in the NFL. The exact specifications of how that is true remain unknown. You can read about the whole saga below.
For now we will all continue to wait on Brandon Aubrey to see what comes next.
Update: 12:45pm ET
The Cowboys also placed a second-round tender on TJ Bass, per ESPN’s Todd Archer.
Archer also noted that the cowboys chose not to tender either Brock Hoffman or Juanyeh Thomas.
