Cowboys must be ready for a draft night drama

The Dallas Cowboys are sitting in a great position with the 12th and 20th overall picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. The opportunity in front of them doesn’t come along very often, so naturally, everyone is holding their breath and hoping they don’t botch things up.

All our deepest hopes are centered around one of college’s top defensive prospects tumbling their way down the board and into the laps of the Cowboys at pick 12. Landing a foundational pass rusher or a lockdown corner would be ideal as those are premium positions, but we’re not picky. Nobody will complain if a certain Ohio State safety or linebacker is the pick. Elite players are elite players. Just make sure they trot on the field with the defense. That’s the only caveat.

In a perfect world, things will fall right into place, and the Cowboys will get their defensive stud, but as we have seen before, things don’t always go according to plan. Celebration could turn into suspense if a run on defensive players wiped through all their top defensive prospects, leaving their draft board looking like a picked-over buffet at closing time.

If such an unfortunate circumstance presents itself, the Cowboys must quickly pick up the phone and start shopping their pick. By sliding back a few spots, the front office could still land a defensive stud while pocketing extra draft capital to fill other holes later in the weekend. It is the ultimate way to turn a bad situation into a treasure chest of opportunities.

But as the old saying goes, it takes two to tango. If the rest of the league decides to clutch their picks tight, the Cowboys must be prepared to stand their ground and make a selection right then and there. While the instinct might be to panic and reach for the next best defensive player to satisfy a specific need, that is exactly how teams end up with expensive busts. If a trade partner is not available, Dallas has to be comfortable taking a breath and pivoting to the best available player on their board, even if it means ignoring the defensive side of the ball for a moment.

Sticking to your guns and drafting for pure talent is the correct way to maximize the raw skill on the roster. When you select the highest-rated player regardless of position, you are essentially betting on the most gifted athlete in the room. This approach ensures the team brings in a playmaker whose presence on the field can change a game. While it might not fill a pressing need today, adding a high-ceiling athlete creates a ripple effect of talent that makes everyone around them better. It is about stacking stars and letting the coaches figure out the logistics later.

Beyond just the immediate flash, this strategy provides long-term roster stability that is difficult to find in free agency. Elite players are built to last and typically require less frequent replacement over the years. By choosing a true stud over a reach, the front office avoids the vicious cycle of having to draft the same position every two seasons because the previous guy could not cut it. That’s a lesson the Cowboys learned the hard way with players like Trysten Hill and Mazi Smith when they wanted a stud defensive tackle so badly, but instead got an ice-cold glass of disappointment.

Taking the best player available also acts as a vital hedge against the bad injury luck that plagues every NFL season. The roster needs we obsess over now rarely look the same later. How long ago was it when we all felt the Cowboys were stacked at cornerback, only to now rejoice at the thought of Mansoor Delane making it to pick 12? Drafting for pure talent provides a much deeper pool of high-end players to draw from when a starter goes down. Having a surplus of talent at one position might seem like it saturates your roster right now, but it will look like a stroke of genius when that depth turns out to be a bonus receiver who ends up setting the single-season franchise record for receptions and yards before the end of his rookie contract.

Having an abundance of talent at a position is the gift that keeps on giving. High-quality players are valuable assets, even if they start their careers down on the depth chart. A player with elite traits and high market value is a versatile piece for any front office. If the roster evolves and a different need becomes more pressing a year from now, having a highly-touted young star on the roster gives you the leverage to make a move that a mid-level starter drafted solely for need simply cannot provide.

Fingers crossed the Cowboys give us what we all want on draft day, but it’s not the end of the world if they miss out on a blue-chip defensive prospect at pick 12. While a defensive overhaul is a popular goal, the draft is ultimately about talent acquisition rather than just checking boxes. Whether they find a trade partner or decide to stand firm and take the best athlete on the board, the priority must be landing a legitimate star. As long as the Cowboys add a player who can dominate their position and move the needle on Sundays, the fans will have plenty of reasons to celebrate when the dust finally settles on draft night.
