Jerry Jones: Cowboys have work to do on Micah Parsons, extensions don’t impact free agency

Jerry Jones noted the Cowboys did not suffer, in his estimation, in free agency last year by not getting important extensions done early.
The Dallas Cowboys held a press conference on Wednesday for Zack Martin’s official retirement. It was emotional and a sign at how fleeting things can be in the NFL and life at large.
Shortly after the presser ended, Jerry Jones held court for a little bit. You will recall that Jerry did not speak at the NFL Combine which felt a bit out of left field, but he absolutely did say a few things on Wednesday relative to where the team currently stands.
First of all, free agency does not necessarily seem to be something the team is prepared to dive into.

This line from Jerry felt a bit like cold water on our faces after all of the fun that Tuesday offered. The Cowboys got a long-term deal done with Osa Odighizuwa (beating the franchise tag deadline) on Tuesday and created $20M in salary cap space by restructuring CeeDee Lamb. They also put things into motion to keep important players like C.J. Goodwin, Juanyeh Thomas and Brock Hoffman.
It was a breath of fresh air from a team that was largely inactive throughout all of last offseason, the fear that Jerry’s quote just up above tugs at once more.
We have all been burned before so most fans remained in a “I need to see more” sort of place. Getting an extension done with Odighizuwa was wonderful, but it would truly feel like the tide is starting to turn if a Micah Parsons one happened before free agency.
Jerry also spoke about this on Wednesday and said that he does not think a Parsons deal, or a lack of one, would impede free agency. What’s more is that he said that he did not feel that a lack of extensions for CeeDee Lamb or Dak Prescott impacted things last year.
Jerry Jones says there are terms and things to work through before getting Micah Parsons’ deal done. He doesn’t see it as something that will get in the way of free agency:

“I don’t believe that not signing Dak or not signing Lamb hurt us in free agency last year at all.”
That last bit is rather hilarious in that the Cowboys did relatively nothing in free agency a year ago. While the Cowboys could have done more even without deals for Prescott or Lamb, getting them done prior to free agency would have created more salary cap space for that exact purpose.
In case it is not obvious, the same logic holds true for Parsons. If the Cowboys get a deal done before next week (the start of free agency) they can lower his cap number for this year, create salary cap space in the here and now and then go on to use it to be aggressive (even selectively so) in free agency.
Maybe this is all just posturing from Jerry and the Cowboys, or maybe Tuesday was just a once in a blue moon type of day.
