Mike Zimmer will not be returning to the Cowboys and is likely retiring from the NFL.

The Dallas Cowboys will not have Mike Zimmer on their staff in 2025.

It was reported on Sunday by Ed Werder that Zimmer will not be a part of Brian Schottenheimer’s staff with the Cowboys in 2025, and that he is likely retiring from the NFL at large.

The Cowboys brought Zimmer out of retirement last year to replace Dan Quinn after he left for the Washington Commanders. Things were a bit rough early on, but Zimmer found his groove as the season wore on and players returned from injury.

Zimmer served two separate stints for the Cowboys, but the second was obviously very brief in that it was only a single season. He is an important member of franchise history in terms of what he brought to the team from his contributions throughout his overall tenure with the franchise.

The writing appeared to be on the wall in the immediate aftermath of the Schottenheimer news as reports began to surface that former Cowboys staffer Matt Eberflus was a prime candidate for the defensive coordinator position under him. Time will tell if that happens.

All the best to Mike Zimmer in retirement, if that is truly what comes next.
