It can’t be overstated how great Micah Parsons is at football.

With the season officially over, the Dallas Cowboys finish with a 7-10 record. Not much went right for the team this season. However, if one thing remains consistent, Micah Parsons is really good at football. In their close loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday, the star edge rusher registered 2.5 sacks. It brings his total to 12 on the season, which is the fourth-highest in the league. It is pretty amazing he finished with this number, as he missed four games this season due to a high-ankle sprain.

Parsons is now the second player in NFL history to accumulate at least 12 sacks in each of his first four seasons in the league. The only other player to do so was Reggie White, arguably the best pass rusher in NFL history.

Now Parsons is in line for a massive contract extension. As of now, Parsons would be playing on his fifth-year option next season. It would be worth roughly $21.3 million. Parsons has said that he doesn’t plan to hold out in hopes of an extension, which is what WR CeeDee Lamb did this last offseason. Regardless, the Cowboys should look to extend Parsons as early as possible, as he has more than proven he is a cornerstone player for the franchise.

After the game on Sunday, Jerry Jones was asked by Dallas media when he believes negotiations will begin. He gave this answer:

“I’ll talk to Micah. I’ll talk to him about it. As a matter of fact, I think he’s called and I think he’s sitting with me at the Cotton Bowl, so that’s probably where we’ll do some talking.”

However, he also made it clear that he doesn’t feel any pressure to get things done before training camp begins.

“I’m not going to alter my timeframe in any kind of negotiation over somebody thinking that one of them [might have] been a little more together in training camp, and that they would’ve had a better year. I don’t buy that and I’ll never buy that.”

Parsons continues to prove himself as not just the best defensive player on the team, but one of the best in the league. If anything, by him being able to persevere through injury this season and have yet another 12+ sack season, he has secured a massive deal in his near future.
