Dallas Cowboys mailbag: Questions on Zack Martin, head coach search
Here is our latest Dallas Cowboys mailbag.
Every week, we take questions on X (Twitter) and Facebook about Dallas Cowboys players and other issues surrounding the team. So let’s get right into it.
“If Zack Martin is retiring who do you want taking his place?”

Mike: Draft names are plenty at the guard position this year but Brock Hoffman didn’t do badly filling in and his level of aggression and bossman mentality fits perfectly for what the team needs. It does look like Zack Martin is leaving if you listen to a few things happening away from the team with Martin, so getting Brock in and preparing to the take role is a smart idea for this front office to get organized quickly.
Dana: Brock Hoffman did an excellent job filling Zack Martin’s shoes at the end of the season. The running game seemed to find its groove and Hoffman deserves his fair share of the credit for that. He also brings a “don’t mess with me” attitude to the offensive line (and the offense as a whole) that is exactly what you want from the guys protecting your QB. As of right now, he’s done enough to be the front-runner in the conversation for RG if Martin does decide to hang up his cleats.
“Should the Cowboys sign Deion Sanders as head coach?”

Mike: Well here’s the way to look at it. Is Sanders a good head coach? Maybe, that’s hard to tell from what we’ve seen him do in Colorado. But he is entertaining. If Dallas has another down season and struggles to make the playoffs you can be sure with Sanders at the helm he’s going to leave you with some entertaining sound bites and leave every press conference with a circus going on. Is he the right man for job in Dallas though? I don’t think so. For the very reason that Deion will be entertaining and the circus he brings with him, he would also take too much of the attention away from Jerry Jones. For that reason, Jerry would be out on Sanders as head coach.
Dana: Jerry Jones loves it when the Cowboys are the center of attention. If the goal for 2025 is to stay in the headlines every week, the Deion Sanders pick for head coach would no doubt bring those results. It would definitely be one of the most entertaining seasons in a long time and whether that is a good thing or a bad thing would obviously depend on how well the team is able to perform on Sundays. A Sanders-led Cowboys team could very well be a competitive playoff team, but I personally would look for someone with a little more experience coaching in the NFL and someone who would fly a little more under the radar.
“What do you think of the rumours of Jason Witten coming into the mix??”

Mike: There are quite a lot of rumors on this one and some reports say Witten is being heavily pushed to get back on the Cowboys books. As a head coach, Witten definitely is out the conversation here. Head coaching young boys to suddenly jumping into a position of being the head coach of fully grown men is a massive leap and not one Jerry will want to do yet. But as a positional coach for the tight end room, having Witten in there would be a very beneficial boost to a young tight end corps. I love the idea of Witten being this year’s tight end coach and that would spur some confidence in Cowboys hearing his name back in the building.
Dana: Right now, Jason Witten only has a few years of high school football, not exactly the robust résumé one would usually expect of an NFL head coach. The chances of Jason Witten becoming the next head coach for the Cowboys is very unlikely, but he could find himself on this staff in a different capacity, possibly as a TE coach. That seems to be one of the perks of being a former player for the Dallas Cowboys. While he could end up being the perfect addition to the coaching staff in 2025, I would prefer that whoever the next head coach is would be able to have a say in the matter.
