After waiting over a week since their season ended the Dallas Cowboys finally came to a decision on Mike McCarthy and ultimately the team came to the conclusion that moving on from McCarthy was in their best interest. Consider that in that week another team in the Chicago Bears requested to interview McCarthy for their own head coach opening and that Dallas denied it.
The Cowboys notoriously left McCarthy to work the 2024 season in the final year of his deal, something they tasked Jason Garrett with on two different occasions. While McCarthy should not be absolved of his fair share of blame that the front office handled the situation that way, and that they delayed important extensions for superstar players and were their usual inactive selves throughout all of free agency. It all created a firestorm for McCarthy to work in and injuries piled up on top of it all which broke the season even further.
As noted though McCarthy is not purely innocent. He was hired by the Cowboys in 2020 to take the franchise where they had not been in a very long time in the conference championship game. While McCarthy did a number of things the Cowboys had not seen happen in that same span (like taking the team to the playoffs three straight seasons in a row or building a legitimate homefield advantage), he ultimately fell short of that critical goal.
There are many who believe the true problem with the Dallas Cowboys these days is not who the head coach is but rather who they report to. That may or may not be true, but ultimately one of those posts is going to be changing very soon.
The Dallas Cowboys will officially have their 10th head coach in franchise history in short order.
Who do you think it will be?
