Report: Bill Belichick group doubted Jerry Jones would hand over control in Dallas
Bill Belichick’s group reportedly doubted whether Jerry Jones would relinquish control of the Dallas Cowboys.
Some of our questions will be answered about a month from now. It is extremely likely that by then the Dallas Cowboys season will be over and that we will have received an answer on a very important question.
Who will be the team’s head coach in 2025?
At the moment, Mike McCarthy obviously holds that post, but given that he is finishing the final year of his original contract, and that it has been a year to say the least, it certainly seems possible, if not likely, that the Cowboys could move on. It feels like most people have been assuming this for the entirety of the 2024 calendar year.
You can lump University of North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick and his evaluation group into that mix. Yes, Belichick is coaching the Tar Heels now which means he won’t be coaching the Cowboys any time soon. Whether or not this is good news for McCarthy remains to be seen, but the point today is that Belichick and those close to him reportedly viewed Dallas as a potential destination for his return to coaching in 2025.
ESPN’s Seth Wickersham had a detailed report about Belichick’s departure to the world of college football and near the beginning offered thoughts on how Belichick seemed to be evaluating NFL options for 2025:
Dallas was a potential spot — nobody can take a collection of talent and turn it into a team like Belichick — but nobody knew if owner Jerry Jones would move on from Mike McCarthy, and if he did, if he’d want to hand over the team to Belichick.
This is obviously the biggest question when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys these days. Jerry Jones exists as the person who operates all and answers to no one, and the reality is that not every coach is comfortable with that kind of status quo. If Jones would not change for the greatest NFL coach of all time, then it is hard to believe that he would change for anyone.
The anyone of the hiring cycle, whether Dallas is looking for someone or not, will in all likelihood be Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. According to the Wickersham report, Belichick’s group believes he may wind up with the Chicago Bears. What’s more, Belichick’s group believes the Bears job is the best one that will be available.
According to sources with direct knowledge, the group deemed that the Chicago Bears were probably the most attractive job, but that team brass was unlikely to consider Belichick. The group expects the same thing that most around the league do: that the Bears will go offense, hoping to give quarterback Caleb Williams a chance at a career, probably targeting Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
It is hard to not say that Chicago would be an idea destination for whoever is looking for a a head coaching job with a new team. Caleb Williams appears to be a franchise-caliber quarterback and they have plenty of offensive pieces there to help make everything shine. Add in that the Bears are in one of the top markets in the country and it all passes the smell test.
But bringing everything home, it certainly makes matters surrounding the Cowboys a bit tenuous as we forecast into the spring. Not only are the Cowboys now unavailable to hire Belichick if they even wanted to, but the Cowboys may not be viewed as the top destination of would-be spots across the NFL. They would ultimately have to settle, in all likelihood, for their second or third option which suggests that retaining Mike McCarthy may make more sense than some want it to.
As noted we are about a month away from starting to generate some answers on this subject. The clock is ticking.
