Cowboys fan confidence in organization ticks up, but most NFL fans think they will fail to cover

The Cowboys recent wins have fans feeling better

The Dallas Cowboys waited until it was too late to start winning football games consistently in 2024. A brutal opening stretch of the season, littered with injuries, defensive breakdowns and inconsistent offensive play led the Cowboys to a 3-7 record. The coaching and play-calling of Mike McCarthy was under fire, and a complete housecleaning was being contemplated by fans and media alike.

Then a funny thing happened. The Cowboys started winning. Even without Dak Prescott, McCarthy somehow held the team together and they put on some of their best performances of the season. Yes, the schedule got easier, but what was once looking like one of the worst Cowboys seasons ever now has the chance to end with a winning record. There will be no playoffs, but there is a sense of momentum happening.

So much so that many believe that McCarthy might have saved his job and will be re-signed in 2025. It seems Cowboys fans are starting to feel better about the franchise, although the overwhelming majority still do not have confidence in the direction of the team. Only 32% feel things are headed in the right direction, but that is a huge improvement over the single-digit results we were seeing during the middle of the year.

As for this week’s game, the Cowboys were 9.5-point underdogs according to FanDuel at the time of our survey. That is a huge spread, but still only 38% of NFL fans thought the Cowboys would cover.
