Today we look back at a number 58 for the Cowboys. Michael William Hegman was born on January 17, 1953, and was chosen by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round of the 1975 NFL Draft. For the first four seasons, he contributed mostly as a special teams player and an outside linebacker. Over the course of 12 years, Hegman participated in over 100 games and established himself as a reliable member of the Cowboys’ defense. His contributions aided the Cowboys in securing two NFC Championships and one Super Bowl victory.

Hegman’s standout moment in Cowboys history was in Super Bowl XIII. Despite the Cowboys losing the game to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 35-31, Hegman’s most famous play was when he stripped the ball from Terry Bradshaw and scored a 37-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Hegman completed his entire 12-season NFL career in Dallas, contributing to the team’s victory in Super Bowl XII. Following the 1987 season, he decided to retire at the age of 34.
