In 1968, the Cowboys faced the Detroit Lions in Week 1. The game started with the Lions taking the lead, but that score was soon ignored as the Cowboys went on a rampage. Bob Hayes opened the scoring for Dallas and that was followed by another four touchdowns before the Lions managed to score again. Dan Reeves and Walt Garrison both scored two touchdowns each and Chuck Howley would score a pick-six. The Cowboys won 59-13.

The 1968 season would end with Dallas finishing the regular season 12-2, the best record during the Tom Landry era. But the team would lose to Cleveland in the Conference Championship game, an ending that would replicate itself the next year. The team averaged 30.8 points per game during the regular season, and holds the record for most points scored through the first three games of a season.

The second time the Cowboys hit 59 points in a game was in 1980, this time against the San Francisco 49ers. The game was played at Texas Stadium in Week 6 of the regular season and this one was over before it even started. The Cowboys scored three unanswered touchdowns and a field goal until Dwight Clarke managed to reel in a 52-yard touchdown late in the second quarter. But all that did was add fuel to the fire for Dallas as they went on to score another five touchdowns. Drew Pearson would have a career game scoring three touchdowns, a career high, and Ron Springs would follow suit by scoring two touchdowns. Dallas won 59-14 and would end the regular season with a 12-4 record but lost to Philadelphia in the NFC Championship. This would be the first season playing after Roger Staubach’s retirement.
