Obvious opportunity for TE Brevyn Spann-Ford to be next Cowboys UDFA success

One thing the Cowboys do well is secure talented football players whom slipped through the cracks of the NFL draft in undrafted free agency. The team has routinely managed to land diamonds in the rough, some who eventually turn into star players such as Tony Romo, Miles Austin and Cole Beasley. Outside of those players, though, numerous others have turned into key contributors, such as Markquese Bell, Dan Bailey, Barry Church and more. This year’s example may just be Brevyn Spann-Ford.

Spann-Ford, the talented tight end from Minnesota, has officially signed a 3-year contract with the Cowboys with a total value of $2,850,000 and an average annual salary of $950,000. Standing at an impressive 6-foot-6 and weighing 260 pounds, Spann-Ford brings a big-bodied presence to the team’s tight end room. The Cowboys were so keen on securing his services that they outbid other teams, offering him a $20,000 signing bonus and a substantial guarantee of $225,000. This investment reflects high expectations that he will make the 53-man roster.

Spann-Ford is the fourth Big Ten tight end on the Cowboys’ roster, joining players such as Jake Ferguson from Wisconsin, Luke Schoonmaker from Michigan, and Peyton Hendershot from Indiana. Despite a somewhat challenging final college season, the Cowboys saw potential in Spann-Ford, and now he’s ready to contribute to their success. His work could also extend to special teams under John Fassel’s guidance.

Why was Spann-Ford worth the investment? He possesses one skill that should supersede all of the others on roster, run blocking as an inline tight end.
