5 things to know about Cowboys' No. 87 Pick, LB Marist Liufau
The Cowboys found themselves faced with a dilemma as time ticked away on the 87th pick. They had trade-down offers in hand from other teams and an awfully long wait- 87 more picks- until their next slated selection, but they had the name of a player they really liked written on the card in front of them.
In the end, they stuck to their guns and brought in an absolute loose cannon of a linebacker in Notre Dame’s Marist Liufau. Many draft analysts have already called the pick a serious reach; Dane Brugler had Liufau graded as a fifth- or sixth-round choice.
“The Beast” also ranked Liufau as this draft class’s 15th-best linebacker, though, giving Dallas an easy line on filling a position of need. Problem is (for some), they passed on 10 other higher-graded linebackers to get him; of that group, only Payton Wilson was not still on the board to start Day 3.
That might mean the Cowboys could have taken a running back at 87 and still ended up with Liufau. And they almost certainly could have slid back a reported seven spots and not lost him. But the front office was clearly all-in on Liufau.
Here’s what fans should know about the newest Cowboys linebacker.
