CB Jourdan Lewis returning to Cowboys on 1-year deal

After a few days that saw several Cowboys defenders bolt for the exits, one key piece of the puzzle on that side of the ball is staying right where he has been all along.

Veteran cornerback Jourdan Lewis will return to Dallas for an eighth season with the club, according to word Thursday from his agent.

Lewis was a third-round draft pick in 2017 out of Michigan and has appeared in 99 regular-season games wearing the star. In that time, he has amassed 315 tackles, 36 passes defended, 16 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, eight QB hits, nine interceptions, eight fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles, and one touchdown (on a fumble return in 2019).

The 28-year-old missed a large chunk of the 2022 season after suffering a foot fracture seven games into the schedule, on his first interception of the year. Doctors called the break one of the worst they had ever seen, more akin to what might result from a high-speed car accident or a fall from considerable height. The injury required one urgent surgery to keep Lewis’s bones from breaking through the skin and then another procedure to remove the titanium hardware used in the initial repair.

Lewis didn’t walk for over four months after the career-threatening injury but was able to make a remarkable recovery and return to the field for the Cowboys in Week 2 last season. He finished in the team’s top 10 in tackles and led the Dallas defense in forced fumbles.
