Dallas Cowboys injuries: Tyler Smith reportedly tore plantar fascia in his foot against Detroit Lions
Tyler Smith reportedly tore the plantar fascia in his left foot on Saturday night.
The Dallas Cowboys won on Saturday, the end of which will be a discussion point well into the New Year, but it appears that the victory came at a price.
Second-year guard Tyler Smith left the game before its conclusion and appeared to be favoring his left foot and ankle area. Sunday morning brought with it a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that he tore the plantar fascia in his foot.
#Cowboys standout G Tyler Smith finally completely tore the plantar fascia in his foot last night, sources say, which sounds bad -- but is actually good(!).

His status this week is TBD, but he'll be fine long-term. This can provide immediate relief for a player.
Rapoport interestingly included the word “finally” in his report which seems to suggest that Tyler has been playing with a partially torn plantar fascia for some time. To be clear that is an assumption based on his wording.
He also noted that this is a bit of a positive thing which certainly sounds strange. But ESPN’s Todd Archer added that a full tear is in fact sometimes the more-preferred option and that Smith felt like he could have played.
Cowboys LG Tyler Smith suffered a full plantar fascia tear in his left foot vs. Detroit, according to a source, but that doesn't mean he is going to miss significant time. He was saying after the game he felt he could have played. A full tear, in some ways, better than partial.

The Cowboys will have something to play for against the Washington Commanders next week regardless of how the rest of Week 17 shakes out. But perhaps they decide to rest Smith in the name of getting him right and ready for the playoffs. We will see how the situation unfolds.
